What is the Online Petty Fan Community?

The Online Petty Fan Community includes all the interaction between fans of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. To narrow it down I have put these parts as the main ones of the Petty Community: Official site and BBS, the fansites (and forums) of GoneGator and Petty.Online, the mailinglist tpetty-l on Panix.com, the newsgroup alt.music.tom-petty and the bootlegtradinggroup petty-boots.

How do I know if I'm a member of the Petty Community?

You're a member if you visit or take part in one of the sites/mailinglists/groups below. But even if you have never heard of or participated in these, but you are a fan of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and have an e-mailaddress, you are a member.

What is this research all about?

For my final exam of the School of Journalism (located in Utrecht, The Netherlands, Europe), I have to create 3 online articles (in dutch). This article about the usefullness and importancy of an online community of fans behind an artist or a band, is one of them.

What will I do with the info you provide?

The info I will put in a database (that won't be part of the publication) and from that I will create spreadsheets, graphics and statistics. I will draw conclusions from that, which will be mentioned in my article. The article will also contain interviews with and profiles of important people in the Petty Community, like the webmasters of the fansites, the listowners, Cathy Buffington, etc.

Who will read the final article?

The article will be read and reviewed by my two counselors, Peter Douma and Peter Verweij and a yet unknown external committee from the professional field (digital journalism).
