Ghana

On 6th March, 1957 the British Colony of the Goldcoast became independent. The country was renamed after the Ancient West Sudanese Empire (Gana). Kwame Nkrumah was Ghana's first leader. It was under him that the Gold Coast emerged as the first colony of British Africa to become sovereign after the Second World War. The last 30 years have witnessed a constant struggle of the country to find a solution to the question of future political and economic development. In December 2000 there have been elections which formed a new goverment and a new president after so many years Jerry Rawlings. The new president is Agyehum Kufuor. People have good hope that things will change now.

The project location

The location of SUNTAA-NUNTAA is Wa. Wa is the capital city of the Upper West Region in Ghana. The Upper West Region is the youngest administrative region in Ghana, created in 1983. The Upper West Region is also the poorest region of Ghana The projects are spread over the whole Upper West Region.
