Ras Za'atir (Ras Atar)

Facts about dive:
It is not possible to anchor around Ras Za'atar and thus a drift dive is necessary. As the wall descends vertically from the surface to the abyss and there are sometimes powerful currents, only divers with good basic skills should attempt the descend. Enter the water about 100 meters south of the cape (see left picture) and once you've reached the desired depth, proceed northward.
The reef at this site is similar but more contoured than Ras Ghozlani, with many cracks and fissures, some forming small caves (at 30 m) which can be entered.
There is a reasonable range of coral species, both hard and soft and a large-scale growth of xeniid soft corals. Coral quality is generally good, but suffers from silting and sandfall, particularly to the north. Fish life is excellent with a dense and diverse fish population that outshines Ras Ghozlani.
The rich selection of Red Sea fishes makes the site a real attraction, and more than compensates for the somewhat lacklustre condition of the coral.

Access to the dive: By local or live-aboard boat from Sharm el Sheikh (40 minutes), Na'ama Bay or other ports.
Conditions: Generally easy, but visibility can be poor due to sediment.
Experience grade: Everyone

Average visibility :

Getting there :
By boat

We made a drift dive, entering the water at the south and then drifting to the north (keeping the wall at our left arm). We saw a turtle high above us (we were at 25 m); other encounters included a Napoleon wrasse, 2 giant moray eels and a blue spotted stingray.
