Short biography
Stefan Niculescu was born on July 31, 1927 in Moreni in the Dambovita region, some 60 kilometers north of Bucharest.
Education
His first studies were in Bucharest at the Royal Academy of Music (1941-1946). Afterwards he studied at the Polytechnic Institute in
Bucharest (1946-1950) and subsequently again at the Academy of Music (1951-1957). Here he studied composition with
Mihail Andricu, harmony and counterpoint with Mihail Jora, orchestration with Rogalski and piano with Muza
Germani-Ciomac. In 1966 he studied electro-acoustic music with Mauricio Kagel at the Studio Siemens in Munich.
During the summers of 1966, 1967 and 1968 het attended the Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt (studies under
Ligeti, Stockhausen, Karkoschka, Becker, Caskel, Gawriloff, Siegfried Palm and Aloys Kontarsky).
In Bucharest Niculescu worked as piano-teacher (1958-60), researcher at the Institute of Art History (1960-1963) and
lecturer in composition and analyses at the Academy of Music. Since 1993 he has been a professor at the Academy.
He has been composer-in-residence at the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst in Berlin and lecturer in Darmstadt.
