Man goes to stay with his brother for a few days, after he had disappeared without trace for fifteen years. An uncomfortable, nerve-wracking visit, that leads to the discovery of a disconcerting secret.
Luc Sipkes and his very pregnant wife Mieke unexpectedly receive a phone call from an acquaintance: Luc's brother Ad has just been sighted in the vicinity of La Roche in the Belgian Ardennes. Fifteen years ago, Ad disappeared without trace and Luc and his family have not heard a word from him ever since. Now it turns out that, for no apparent reason, he is living with his wife in seclusion far from the inhabited world. In an attempt to fathom Ad's motives, Luc goes to stay with the couple for a few days, albeit uninvited. Tensions rise. When Luc hears strange sounds around the house, he starts to feel ill at ease and stumbles across a disconcerting secret. Some people live in shame. It dominates their lives. With Great Joy sketches an extreme situation in which there is no way back from shame. The almost tragic dilemma that this entails was the motive for making the film. With Great Joy is about people who have a lot of love in them and want to do the right thing, but never make the right decisions because their problems are almost insoluble. This film consciously chose a simple set, costumes, cinematographic style and location, in order to focus on the gripping and nerve-racking element of the situation.
