Warhammer Fantasy Battles

One of my hobby's is playing Warhammer fantasy Battles and collecting and painting the miniature models that make up the armies you need to play these battles.

When I was little I played a lot with miniature soldiers. However I was always wondering how I could make the battles that I played a bit more realistic (rather then choosing what model would be removed from the battlefield). Well I found it in Warhammer battles. Not only is it fun to collect and paint the sometimes fantastic miniatures. It also provides a set of rules in order to play a realistic battle, with all the elements of strategy, tactics (i.e choosing the miniatures you want to use, the primary setup of your units and moving the units during the battle) as well as luck and changes (rolling dice determines whether somebody dies, wounds an enemy or flees from the battle).

I play with 2 different armies at this moment. The first are the Orcs & Goblins and next to that I also play with the Undead army.

Orcs & Goblins was my first army (and is now my biggest). These nasty green creatures plunder any city (or anything for that matter) that they can find. The goblins are small little critters while the Orcs are Big and Tough. They usually gang up together by concurring neighboring tribes. Therefore battles between different tribes of Orcs & Goblins occur regularly. Mostly these battles prevent the armies of the Ors & Goblins to get very large. However if there is a good leader then occasionally a huge army will rise form the badlands where these creatures live.

If this happens then the world trembles while kings and emperors of the Human and Dwarf countries brace themselves to fight back the enormous hordes of the greenskins.

I also collect undead models and it's quite an interesting army of mainly skeletons supported by some carion, bats and dire wolfs. A collection of mummies a vampire and a necromancer make up the leaders that can rise an army of the Undead.

The undead army consists of frightening creatures brought back to live by a wizard that uses the magic of death. Mostly this is a necromancers but vampires also have the ability to practice this black magic. If these wizards have enough time (and corpses) then they can raise incredible armies to wreak havoc among it's enemies.

If you would like to learn more about this hobby then just visit the GAMES WORKSHOP Homepage. There you will find lots of info about the game and addresses of stores near you

If you already play Warhammer and live near Swifterbant and you would like to challenge me for a battle then you just need to look me up in the phonebook to contact me.

Warmachines are also a fun part of the fantasy battles, though it is hard to tell if they are really effective.
Especially the Orcs & Goblins have a curious range of machinery  to damage the enemy.
Catapults and chariots are quite common but a doom diver is very odd and fun. A doom diver is a mad goblin that shoots himself up in the air with a catapult and then dives into the enemy with a crackling smash. Some have made wings of feathers and cloth to try to stay in the air a bit longer and, more important, to be able to steer themselves into the enemy.

Here is a helpful device for calculating your army.
It is an Excel spreadsheet that I use myself. It is very handy,  You only have to fill in the quantity of miniatures in a unit and the points value and you know your army value right away.
