Sander
Germanus
(Amsterdam,1972) studied classical saxophone from 1988 untill 1995 with Ed
Bogaard at the Conservatory of
Amsterdam, where he finished his studies as a soloist cum laude with
distinction for artistic qualities. He began his musiccompositionlessons with
Peter-Jan
Wagemans as his compositionteacher and Klaas
de Vries as his orchestrationteacher in 1992 at the Conservatory of Rotterdam, where he finished his
compositionstudies with distinction in 1998. From 1994 he also studied with Luc Van Hove at the Royal Flemish Musicconservatory at Antwerp. At request of De
Nederlandse Opera he had a meeting and musical confrontation with Pierre
Boulez in 1995. In 1998 he won a compositionprize from the city of Amsterdam
for his composition “Adamsarchipel”. In 1999 he was admitted to the Orpheus
Institute of Ghent to realise a studyproject with relation to future
applications of quartertones in music as an absurdistic and pleasant
alienated element in his ‘musicthermic’. At this institute he joined several
residential seminaries from among others Helmut Lachenmann and Jonathan
Harvey. In 2000 he was nominated on television for the NPS-cultureprize for
his quartertone composition “Continental” and reached the final. During the
season 2001/2002 a stipend at the Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia of Bamberg was offered to him,
where he stayed for half a year to compose and to give lectures at the
university and some grammar-schools. In 2003 he composed a piece for Il
Solisti del Vento in occasion of the Festival of Flanders Antwerp. In 2004
he composed “Steigers” for the opening of a new quarter of Amsterdam, based
on a concept of town-building, like “Adamsarchipel”. In the spring of 2005
the final presentation of his studyproject will take place at the Orpheus
Institute. He composed music for several
ensembles, like the Nieuw Ensemble, Percussiongroup The Hague, Calefax
reedquintet, Doelen stringquartet, Escher Ensemble, Aurelia Saxophonequartet,
Noordhollands Philharmonisch Orkest, Dario Fo Choir and the Residentie
Orchestra, etc. Momentary he is composing pieces
for Orkest De Volharding and for the Doelen Ensemble in combination with
Calefax, in which his quartertonetheories can be heard. His music has been
regular broadcasted by radio and television en has been performed
international. His pianowork "Beetje Precies" and "Capriccio
voor genoeg vioolsnaren" have been brought out on CD. As a saxophoneplayer he played in several orchestras and ensembles since 1990, among which the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Holland, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchester, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Holland, The Netherlands Promenade Orchestra. From 1991 he played the soprano- and sopraninosaxophone in the World Saxophone Orchestra and several other ensembles. From 1992 he participated in saxophonemasterclasses of Jean-Marie Londeix, Claude Delangle (France), Ryo Noda (Japan), Krzysztof Herder (Poland) en Eddie Daniels (USA). His début as a saxophonesoloist came in 1998 with the Doelen Ensemble during the Gaudeamus International Musicweek in Amsterdam.
