There comes a time in your live that you are confronted with the end of an era.
I was about 12 years old when we met at school in 1977. During the breaks he had a whole group of children around him, which asked him questions and listened to his stories. He was very funny and knew a lot about all sorts of subjects. He also adopted the logic reasoning of Mr. Spock. That was no coincidence because at that time he was really into a big German science fiction series Perry Rhodan. I like everything about space so we had something in common.
He turned out to be very creative with carton board and a paintbrush. He could build spaceships and stations like the best. I myself who grew up with the scale train of my father was very impressed so we became the best of friends. Johan imagined to be the leader of a people and traded and fought wars with other peoples according to some rules. This was the first time I encountered the phenomena 'Role playing'. Later my friend Simon joined the club and brought his friend Pim with him. So now we had a real group of 'Role players' who where at the beginning of a long friendship.
It was this Simon who knew a teacher called Jack who just started a new Advanced Dungeon and Dragons group. He asked me to join and I was hooked from the start. I told Johan immediately about this new way of 'Role playing' and introduced him to the game. After a while we also started groups of our own and were alternatively a player and DM in each other's group.
At first we played in my house. Every saturday with sometimes 10 people. In 1989 I moved and from that time on we met at first Friday of the month at Johan his house. Not only for playing AD&D but also for just having a social gathering among friends.
But nothing is forgotten and in my thoughts you will always be there, my friend...
