Den Helder is surrounded by water on three sides; the North Sea, the Wadden and the Marsdiep. On the one side it offers peace, space and fresh air as well as activity on and around the water. This is provided by the Royal Netherlands Navy as well as by the water-sports enthusiasts who visit one of the five harbours and, for example, the transport of a drillplatform. In the middle of the harbour area there stands the old 'Willemsoord' Government Shipyard built by Napoleon. The maritime past can be rediscovered in the Naval Museum with a real submarine and the 'Dorus Rijkers' Rescue Museum.

Besides this Den Helder has a town centre with a variety of shops and excursion destinations, tropical plants in the Orangery and a private collection of dolls in the Käthie Kruse Museum. Besides this there are various events such as the National Naval Day with the re-enacted Battle of the Marsdiep, the Beach Spectacle and the culinary 'Tastiest Weekend'.
