The organization, which was founded in 1997 and is located in Heereveen, The Netherlands. The company specializes in Maritime and Air Transport security. SPS consists of 4 divisions:

SMS offers services to Ship-Owners around the world which include specially trained Maritime Security Teams (MST). The members of these teams are recruited from mainly from the special forces of The Royal Netherlands Marine Corps' anti-terrorist units and the Special Boat Squadron and the British Special Air Services.

In Aug 1999 SMS announced its intention to establish an Operating Centre in the Subic Bay Freeport and wants to cooperate with the IMB and its Piracy Reporting Centre in Kuala Lumpur. The operating centre will seek to co-operate with the maritime safety company IDESS.
There are also plans for liaisons offices in Gambia and Curaçao to respectively cover the regions Africa and South America.
