Autumn 2001 I decided to build a RC sailing yacht.
Some WWW.-searching led me to the website of the XL25.
It's plans are free to download for anyone interested, and so I did.
The building plans are accompanied with a comprehensive building manual, which makes building the boat much easier. Getting the boat down to the minimum weight is were things get more serious.
I didn't bother about weight too much, the first boat would be a test-case, which would be, if not too heavy, a perfect toy for daddy as well as the boys. And so it proved to be.
I enjoyed the building of the boat as much as sailing her and I can encourage anyone interested in low-budget RC-sailing to give the XL25 a try.
Total costs are approx. 100 Euro if you can saw most of the wood yourself from scrap.
I did this myself and only had to buy 3 lengths of carbon rod for the spars and a sender/receiver unit by graupner.

In spite of the relatively simple, hard chine hull, the XL25 sails very well.
The swing-rig, built of carbon rods, is very effective.
Sailing this boat is great fun, particularly in a blow.
She handles sharp upwind sailing as well as downwind planing !
