Welcome to File Sync 1.0



Please read this brief discussion and the license conditions at the end of this file



File Sync is a utility that updates a destination folder after comparing it with a watch folder. Above, you see File Sync at work, copying files from one folder to another. This file shows how to set up File Sync in such a way that it copies the files you want from the folder you want to the folder you want. We will now discuss every feature of File Sync.




The software



The software consists of the File Sync application, the documentation in the File Sync Info folder, and a Read Me file, as shown in the window below.






Minimum Requirements



File Sync 1.0 needs AppleScript 1.4 or later. It is recommended to use this utility with MacOS 9.x only. It takes at least 4MB of RAM. If the number of files in either the Watch folder or the Destination folder is very large, more memory is needed accordingly the number of files.






Fily Sync 1.0 runs on PPC Macs, only. This includes all iMacs and G4 Macs that are bootable in MacOS 9.x.




Installing



Install this software by copying it to your hard disk. If you received a .sit or .hqx file, you will have to expand that file, first. Use Aladdin Systems' StuffIt Expander do decompress the file. You may download StuffIt Expander from http://www.stuffit.com.




Quick Start



Move File Sync to a location on your hard disk. Double-click it's icon in the Finder. Enter a file type or click the Choose button. Determine the length of the intervals. Then click the Start button, which turns into a Stop button. Click again to make File Sync stop watching. If File Sync start copying files, you may press command-period and immediately click the Stop button.

    Shows the splash window.



File menu


Quit
    Quits File Sync.



Edit


Undo
    Reverts the last action.


Cut
    Cut text.


Copy
    Copy text

Paste Text / Paste Picture
    Paste text into selected field. Menu item is disable if picture is on the clipboard.


Clear
    Clear selected text.




The window




Start button

    Starts scanning the originating folder (Watch folder).




Stop button

    Once you have clicked the Start button, it changes into a Stop button. Click again to stop scanning the Watch folder.




Watch Folder

    Click the button (gray rectangle) to select a different Watch folder.




File Mask for Target Files checkbox

    If this checkbox is checked, only files with the given extension or file type will be copied to the Destination folder. The text field is editable in this case.




File type field

    The field containing the three or four letter code, referring to specific files, e.g. pictures, html source files, or text files. This field may contain both DOS extensions or Macintosh file type codes. DOS extensions must start with "." or "*." (without quotes).




Choose button

    Click this button to choose a file with a different file type. The new file type will appear in the File Type field.




Send Files to This Folder (Destination folder)

    Click the button (gray rectangle) to select a different Destination folder. Clicking this button, or the Watch Folder button, brings the following window on screen.





Scan Interval

    Determines the time intervals between File Sync's attempts to update the Destination folder.




Arrows button

    Click the Up or Down arrow to increase respectively reduce the time interval between attempts to update the Destination Folder.




Quit button

    Quit File Sync.
