Quibble Archives Browser
latest version: Quibble Archives Browser 1.0.2
Quibble Archives Browser 1.0Copyright©2002-2003 by Mark Schonewille Nijmegen, The Netherlands On the right, you see a screenshot showing Quibble Archives Browser 1.0 on my PowerBook. My iMac is synchronizing its database with my PowerBook, as is indicated by the message in the yellow text box in the top-right of the screen. About Quibble Archives Browser Every now and then, ways to manage and browse information that is downloaded from the HyperCard Mail List are discussed on that List. Several solutions have been proposed, which essentially resort to downloading e-mails using an e-mail application and AppleScript. Once downloaded, messages can be read and searched, but messages that dont make it to the mail box or are lost otherwise are difficult to recover. The Quibble Archives Browser uses a different approach. This Browser searches the Quibble Archives, the archives of the HyperCard Mail List. It does not use e-mail but directly downloads the headers of relevant messages. The user decides which messages to read. These messages are downloaded from the Quibble server. Once downloaded, messages are store in an off-line database. When searching messages, the user can choose whether to search on-line or off-line. If an on-line search is done, all messages in the Archives are searched for entries. A message selected for download by the user is downloaded from the Archives if it is not present in the off-line database, only. This makes browsing the Archives faster as the user continues to search and download the archives for different topics. Below, you see a screenshot of the Quibble Archives Browser. The options window that is visible in this screenshot is available to registered users. Unregistered users have a simpler options window with less possibilities.
Currently, a user manual is being written. Read the manual if problems occur or ask the author of this application. Minimum Requirements The Quibble Archives Browser needs a PowerPC with at least MacOS 8.1. It has not been tested with earlier System versions and might work with MacOS 7.5.3 or later. AppleScript 1.4 or later has to be installed. Installing the Quibble Archives Browser Install the Quibble Archives Browser 1.0 by moving the folder with that name to your hard disk. It is not possible to start the Quibble Archives Browser from a locked volume, such as a CD-rom, or disk image. If you are going to use this application with system software earlier than MacOS 8.6, then you may have to install the URL Access extension. You find this extension in the Extra folder on your Quibble Archives Browser CD-rom or disk image. Simply drop the URL Access extension onto your system folder and press Okay if you are asked whether to put the extension into the Extensions folder. If there is an extension with this name in the Extension folder already, do not replace it. Quick Start Open the Quibble Archives Browser by double-clicking it in the Finder and make a connection to the internet (e.g. with Apple Remote Access). Once you have a connection, enter a few keywords in the Query field, uncheck the Search Off-line checkbox, and click the Search button. Netscape will download the headers for you and send them to the Browser. The messages are shown in the Browser window. Double-click a message to download the message and save it to your database. If you downloaded it before, it will appear in the Browser window almost immediately. You can save a set of message headers including their location on the Quibble server. After doing an on-line search, just choose Save Bookmark... from the File menu. If an error occurs after doing an on-line search, while the error message doesnt make any sense to you, it might be that the Quibble is off-line. In that case, just try again, later. Migrating to a new Message Database You may want to use the the messages of your old database with a later version of the Browser. First of all, choose Database Info from the Sync menu. In the Info window, you will see the version number of the database. Currently, there are two versions: 1.0a001 and 1.0b003. If your old database has version number 1.0b003, simply substitute your old database for the database that comes with the latest Browser. You do this by opening the Q Data folder, removing the new Database and putting the old Database back in place. If the version number of the old database is 1.0a001, you should put the old database somewhere on your hard disk. Once you have installed the new version of the Quibble Archives Browser, open it by double-clicking on its icon in the Finder. Once the Browser is running, choose Local... from the Sync menu and select the old Database. Now, the Browser will copy the messages from the old database to the new one.
