F650 Workshop - oil change

[ HomePage | Funduro | Workshop ]

Every 10 000 kilometres the F650 should get new oil and a new oil filter.

Tools: spanner or drive socket # 17 and 8, hexagonal socket # 4
Extra parts: 2.6 liter 20W40 oilt, oil filter, O-ring for the filter lid, eventually new washer for the sump plug.

  1. Ride the bike for about 10kms - the oil becomes warm and particles will float through the oil.
  2. Remove the skidplate for easy access. Put an empty can under the sump to catch up the oil.
  3. Remove the sump plug from the engine (size 17), use pliers for the last few turns.

  4. Remove the plug from the frame reservoir (size 8). This plug is located below the radiator and above the exhaust bend.

  5. Remove the dipstick from the frame so the oil can flow out more easy.
  6. Remove the cover of the sprocket - by pushing the brake pedal the lower bolt can be removed.
  7. Remove the cover of the oil filter on the right side of the engine and pull out the filter.

  8. Wipe off any metal parts that are on the magnet on the sump plug. Many or large metal parts are an indication that something inside the engine is wearing out.

    Let the engine drip well.

  9. Put in a new oil filter, lubricate all rubber parts and a new O-ring in the cover with some new motor oil.
  10. Put on the cover of the filter house (?) and tighten the bolts at 10Nm.
  11. Screw in the plugs of the oil reservoir in the frame (10Nm) and sump (40Nm). Don't forget the washers - they should be replaced every other service interval. Put in the plugs by hand first and do not try to put them in by force!
  12. Pour about 1.7 litres of 20W40 semi synthetic oil into the engine. Use a funnel or pouring can and take your time. The oil just flows very slowly down under. Semi synthetic oil is better for your gearbox and clutch.
  13. Let the engine run for 1 minute.
  14. Fill the engine with the rest of the oil until the dipstick indicates maximum level.
  15. Screw in the dipstick and remount the skidplate and sprocket cover.

The engine contains a maximum of 2.6 litres of oil. That is a lot more than the 2.1 litres that is in all books but the right amount to be able to use the dipstick. With only 2.1 litres aboard measuring oil level gives no result. The extra oil did not come out of my engine and some extra coolant and lubrication never does any harm. New oil can also be poured in with the valve cover removed when checking clearance.
