F650 - Workshop

[ HomePage | Funduro ]

About a year ago I started reading 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. After reading about two chapters I threw away the book - those who ride BMW bikes don't d mechanics themselves. Instead they trust the quality of their bike and blue-and-white mechanic.

Workshop in the open airWrong. After some years I found out that even mechanics are normal human beings that occasionly forget to fasten a bolt - at that time I used some other words to express myself ;-) Besides you have to pay about 45 euros per hour for even the simplest tasks to be done. The turn of the tide came after a punctured tyre in Spain that we repaired ourselves. The job was easier done than I thought beforehand and doing these kind of things tasted for more. I wanted to keep my bike in working order under all circumstances and when possible without assistance. After 50 000 kilometres I finally reached the point where I want to, have to and can do the bulk of maintenance.

Performing regular 10kkm maintenance and replacing worn out parts is not that difficult. With a bunch of good tools, patience and a repair manual (about 30 euro) you'll manage to do the job. Some tasks are described on these pages for a start.
With the standard toolkit that came with your F650 you should be able to disassemble the entire bike. A good wrench with some drive sockets, hexagonal sockets, screw drivers and a torque wrench will make tasks easier. To prevent bolts and nuts being tightened too strong with the risk of dameaging bolts, nuts and threads using a torque wrench is advised. They can be bought at a better hardware store fro 55 euro and up. Good brands are Norbar and Hazet. Better buy a wrench for the smaller torques (eg. 8 to 54 Nm) than a wrench that makes you believe it can handle anything. Smaller bolts are more easily destroyed than a size 22 axle nut. Buy a wrench for larger torques (30 to 150 Nm) when you have to replace the chain.

Performing all tasks are at your own responsability so stay alert and know what you are doing. Don't start the job if you don't have all necessary tools or spare parts or if you don't trust your own skills. Just trying to do something only dameages your motorbike.

ALL MEASURES ARE WITH UK/US DECIMAL PERIOD (eg. 0.10). OTHER COUNTRIES OFTEN USE A COLON IN THIS PLACE (0,10).
