Born

In 1959 in Tblisi, Georgia.

Education

Vakhtang Kakhidze began to study piano when he was six years old. In 1981 he graduated in composition from the Moscow State Conservatory and in 1983 he finished postgraduate studies at this Conservatory. His teachers were Nikolai Sidelnikov (composition) and Edison Denisov (instrumentation).

Style

Vakhtang Kakhidze's work is sincere, full of honesty and ignoring any false aspiration to modernism. Strong emotions as well as gentle, highly aesthetic lyricism are characteristic of his way of expressing dramatic culmination. His harmonic world is rich and interesting. He always seems to seek and find brand-new, attractive combinations in simple, traditional harmonies, and this reveals the very phenomenon of his gift. He is bold enough to be completely open and sincere while creating the beautiful romantic melodies that are characteristic of his musical language. His rhythmic figures are also interesting and colourful: firm and stable like an indestructible basis for further development.
