4 November 1912 in St. Petersburg. Died on 27 February 1978 in St. Petersburg.
Education
He studied piano with his father and theory with Akimenko; studied composition with Gnessin at the Leningrad Conservatory from 1936 until 1941.
He was head of its composition department from 1947 until 1951, teacher from 1951 until 1965 and professor from 1965 until his death.
Style
His early works are marked by a broad Russian melodism, with the harmonic structure following the models of Prokofiev and Shostakovich.
After 1960 he adopted more advanced techniques, including polyphony.
