Undoubtedly the best recorded Ustvolskaya sonata disc to date. Hinterhauser is overliteral in the first two sonatas, but brings out the brooding intensity of the Third and the strangely muted intimacy of the Fourth. No. 5 feels little more than the sum of its parts, but the apocalyptic No. 6 is impressive, the piano staying in tune almost to the end!
