When Hitler invaded Poland the second World War was a fact. Germany annexed large parts of Poland erecting a General Governement of Warsaw. The Soviets occupied Poland east of the Curzon line, so called to protect the White Russian and Ukrainian population of Eastern Poland. Lithuania earlier had had to give up the Memel area to Germany. It received the surroundings of Wilna from Poland. In the West war with France and Britain was a phoney war for the time being.
