Germany 1919-1990

1941

In 1940 Germany occupied the neutral countries of Norway and Denmark in April. In May it attacked the Netherlands, Belgium and France. The Benelux countries and the larger part of France were occupied. Germany annexed Alsace Lorainne and the areas Belgium took from Germany in 1919. Also the Grandduchy of Luxembourg was annexed. Germany's ally Italy was having a difficult time fighting the Greeks in the meantime. When in Yugoslavia a coup replaced pro-German Prince Regent Paul with pro-British King Peter II, Germany occupied Yugoslavia and helped their Italian allies defeating the Greeks. Slovenia was divided between Germany and Italy and sattelite states were set up in Yugoslavia. The Soviets occupied the Balkan states and forced Roumania to give up the Northern Bukovina and Bessarabia. Roumania also had to cede Northern Transsylvania to Hungary. Roumania then joined the Axis powers. The Soviets won their difficult war against Finland and took some lands from that country.
