This makes it possible to shoot this giraffe with a big telelens, but without a tripod. Of course it depends on where we're going. To Africa, for example, we take a lot of stuff. Over there we hire a car and that means we don't have to carry the gear in our backpacks... In India, or other backpacking locations, however, one has to make a more careful selection of equipment, cause over there we travel by public transport. trip to Africa: plenty of Fuji slide film, and some Agfa black and white negative film (about one hundred slide-films for four weeks safari for the two of us, but better pack some extra, just in case of that once in a lifetime....) four mirror-reflex Canon camera's (FD system) wide angle lenses:Canon FD 20mm and 28mm one standard Canon 50mm f1.8 lens two middle range zoom lenses: Canon 80-200mm f4.0L and Tokina 80-200mm f2.8 lens two large aperture tele lenses: Canon FD 300mm f2.8L lens and Canon FD 300mm f2.8 Fluorite lens, combined with Canon 1.4xA and 2xA converters one large telezoom: a Tokina 150-500mm f5.6 zoom lens two tripods: a Gitzo mountaineer carbon fibre lightweight tripod and a Manfrotto tripod both with Gitzo series2 ballheads with quickrelease plates lots of accessoiries: filters, cable releases, two Canon flashes, a teleflash system to use with the bigger telelenses, ect.India and Nepal (black and white)Jelle shooting a tiger, while sitting on top af an elephant... It's amazing how close you can actually get... On especially trained elephants you get right into the action. Although the elephant sometimes gets a bit nervous (rumbling...you feel it in your stomach) we manage to get really close, like ten metres or so. Like this weve seen and photographed several tigers. Most of them ignore the elephant. They have no fear for it whatsoever, and the humans on top of the elephant are basically a snack on an animal too big to eat Apart from the excitement of the chance coming really close to wild tigers, an elephant-ride in the Indian jungle is a special experience. The movement and sound of the elephant, combined with the smell of it and the surrounding jungle its like meditation. You can almost forget that theres maybe a predator like a tiger round the corner We use the bushhawk shoulder-stock while shooting with the big lenses from elephant-back. a tiger on the road in kanha NP.... Our driver Bafati carefully follows this big male tiger. It's early in the morning in December and freezing cold. We came across this tiger on it's morning prowl...We both stopped and looked, the tiger then slowly moved closer to the open (!) jeep. Bafati got nervous, "may be man-eater, has no fear of man..." and reversed the jeep. The tiger came closer and without taking any notice passed our jeep at a few meters distance. After this we knew that it wasn't interested in eating us and we slowly followed the king of the jungle. Spotting a tiger up close from an open jeep is the ultimate safari experience... There's almost never an incident in the interaction between tiger and jeep (and the people in it). Although Bafati once had a tiger with it's front-paws standing in the jeep.(The tourists crawled under the benches) Anyway no injuries then as well. We use the bushhawk shoulder-stock or a beanbag while shooting with the big lenses from the jeep. (pictures taken with Canon Ftb and 28mm 2.8 lens and Canon T90 with 300mm 2.8 FLUORIte lens, Kanha NP, India 1998)Namibia by Beetle September 2001 we travelled by Volkswagen Beetle all the way from Capetown, South Africa, to Etosha NP in Namibia and back. When we look at the slides we made, we remember all the wonderful things we experienced. Driving a beetle through such beautiful landscapes is really something we'llnever forget. The beetle just added something extra to an already great trip. There is basically three ways of photographing Tigers. By jeep, by elephant, or from a viewing-hide.
