World Rally Championship 1986 - BX4TC EVO
The BX4TC was the answer from Citroen regarding the groupe B specification cars within the rally championship. In 1986 the car was homologated for participation in rallies and it made its debute in the Rally of Monte Carlo followed by the Rally of Sweden and finally in the famous Acropolis rally. Citroen/PSA decided to stop the project due to the fact that they did not wish to make any investments anymore after the FIA pronounced the end of Groupe-B. Beneath an overview of all the three rally's mentioned above and the results of the participating 4TC cars and drivers.
First of all an interesting photo which we received from Bruno Jammes and internally published by Citroen Sport.
It shows the 20 produced EVO cars parked together inside the Citroën Racing workshop at Trappes with all the technical people involved in the 1986 World Rally Championship program. It was taken during the official homologation check day by the FIA. Incredible to know that only half of the cars survived. (Click on the photo for a bigger photo)
RALLY MONTE CARLO - 18 till 24 January 1986
This was the first rally where Citroen brought the 4TC Evo groupB spec
cars with a 2200cc 380 Bhp turbo engine. In total two cars showed up during
the start and both had to retire soon after. Driver J.C.Andruet and navigator
A.Peuvergne drove BX 4TC nr "15". This car had numberplate number
9817NR92. This team retired after stage SS 6 due to a rally accident. Other
reports showed: "Driven by Andruet it had to retire on the 8th-stage
because Andruet did not recognise a icy part in time and drove of the track".
We still look for confirmation.
The other team being driver P.Wambergue and navigator J.B.Vieu drove BX
nr "17" and numberplate number 9829NR92. On stage SS1 they had
to retire due to a suspension failure which was very disappointing for the
team.
RALLY SWEDEN - 14 till 16 February 1986
This was the second rally where Citroen participated. Again two cars showed
up. Driver J.C.Andruet and navigator A.Peuvergne drove BX 4TC nr "10".
This car had numberplate number 9830NR92. Both drivers won the highest position
ever reached with a BX4TC in history becoming 6th overall and 4th in class
B-12!!! A very nice achievment.
The other team being driver P.Wambergue and navigator J.B.Vieu drove BX
nr "11" and numberplate number 9829NR92 (the same car as they
had used in Monte Carlo). Just as their teammates they drove very fast and
could reach a nice position. However on stage SS24 the engine broke down
and they had to retire.
RALLY GREECE ACROPOLIS - 2 till 4 June 1986
This was the last rally for the BX 4TC. In total three cars showed up during
the start and sadly all three retired during the first stages. The car was
not tested and prepared well enough for the very rough and rocky circumstances
in Greece. Driver J.C.Andruet and navigator A.Peuvergne drove BX 4TC nr
"14". This car had numberplate number 9829NR92. They had to retire
at stage SS 2 when being involved in a rally accident. There are reports
stating that the car drives was 9809NR92 in stead of 9829NR92. We still
look for confirmation.
The second team being driver P.Wambergue and navigator J.B.Vieu drove BX
nr "17" and numberplate number 9817NR92 (the car which was driven
by Andruet in Monte Carlo). On stage SS1 they had to retire due to a suspension
failure.
The third team was new, being M.Chomat and navigator D.Breton. They drove
BX nr "19" and numberplate number 9799NR92 and could be recognized
by the orange-red-blue striping. Both driver had bad luck and had to retire
on stage SS1 due to a suspension failure just as team 2.
OTHER COMPETITION PARTICIPATIONS
Rallye National France championship 1986
In parallel with the 1986 WRC competition Citroen Sport also had two cars enlisted in the National Rally Championship. Both cars ended their season after the Rallye National Terre De Charent. One of these 2 cars had licenseplate number 9806NR92, EVO chassisnumber 16 and wore startnumber "14" during that last rallye. Today this car still carries these insignes on it. The second car is also in private hands today.
French Rally Cross Championship 1989
Rally cross driver Patrick Pivert build up one of the old factory works cars to a rally-cross car and drove the 1989 Rally Championship. The car was sprayed completely in yellow. After 1989 he decided to discontinue driving the 4TC EVO because the car did not perform any more the needs of the 1990 championship and also because Citroen forced racing team not to use 4TC cars anymore.
