Toelichting
De whisky's die op deze pagina worden vermeld, hebben wij vanaf de zomer van 2001 “verzameld”. Alleen onze eigen flessen zijn in de lijst opgenomen. Het begon ooit met een aantal blends met bekende namen als Famous Grouse en Johnnie Walker, maar we werden ook nieuwsgierig naar andere exemplaren zoals Armorik (uit Bretagne), Ardbeg en The Glenrothes. Omdat er in de wereld vele soorten bestaan, hebben we besloten om te proberen nooit één te drinken die we al kennen.
Whiskytermen
Het woord whisky komt van het Gaelic uisge beatha, levenswater. Whisky is een drank van water en verschillende soorten granen met een alcoholpercentage onder de 94,8. Het behoort minstens drie jaar gerijpt te hebben in vaten met een bepaalde maximale inhoud.
Whisky is eigenlijk niet hetzelfde als whiskey. De extra ‘e’ duidt aan dat er rogge bij de distillatie is gebruikt, maar hier houden distilleerderijen zich niet strikt aan. Vooral de VS en Ierland (samen goed voor 10% van de distilleerderijen) gebruiken de naam whiskey, terwijl de Schotten het bij (Scotch) whisky houden.
- Grain whisky: whisky van ongemoute en gemoute granen; single grain whisky is gemaakt van één graansoort.
- Single malt whisky: whisky van gemoute gerst gemaakt in één distillerderij. De leeftijdsaanduiding is gelijk aan de leeftijd van de jongste whisky die in de drank is verwerkt.
- Vatted of Pure malt whisky: een mengeling van malt whisky's van verschillende distillerderijen.
- Blended whisky: veruit het grootste deel van de geproduceerde whisky's; het zijn mixen van zowel single malt als grain whisky's. Deluxe blends hebben een groter aandeel malts.
Genuttigde whisky's
De lijst hieronder is onderverdeeld naar de landen van herkomst: Schotland, Ierland en de rest van de wereld. Het eerste is een erg groot whiskygebied, en dus is dat verder ingedeeld in regio's aan de hand van de etiketaanduidingen en het boek The Single Malt Whisky Companion van Helen Arthur (Librero 2001).
