Pletter

Pletter is a compression package to compress data on pc to use it on MSX. Pletter is a somewhat improved Bitbuster.

Pletter vs Bitbuster

Of course the files will be a bit smaller with Pletter, otherwise there would not be much use for it... Here is why using pletter will result in smaller files:

The first byte is always uncompressed, so the first bit that Bitbuster outputs is unnecessary. Saves 1 bit.
At the end Bitbuster first outputs a dummy offset before it puts in the end of file marker. Pletter does not. Saves 8 bits.
Pletter uses a 128 bytes bigger look back buffer. Saves some bits.
The Pletter compressor checks more possible outputs. Saves some bits.
Pletter 0.5 checks multiple look back buffer sizes.

Pletter will also compress and decompress faster.

Downloads

Pletter version 0.5c has an option to include the original size in the packed data. If you use this, you have to update the unpacker.

Pletter 0.5c1 - pletter.exe for PC, unpack.asm for MSX, pletter.cpp for laughs.

Pletter 0.4a - The old one, smaller de-compressor and you can decide on the look back buffer size yourself - pletter.exe for PC, unpack.asm for MSX, pletter.cpp for laughs.

Pletter0.5 is not compatible with earlier versions.
