In 1949, Henk Ronnenbergh started his umpiring career and soon was promoted to the highest Dutch league. He continued umpiring until 1982 and retired after 22 seasons, as he didn't officiate in eight years in that span. During his career, Mr. Ronnenbergh also was active on international events, such as seven Haarlem Baseball Weeks and three European Championships (1969, 1971, 1973). After he had concluded his umpiring career, he went on to be become an umpiring advisor for six years.

Before he became an umpiring, Ronnenbergh was the Secretary for Amsterdam-based club DEC from 1952-1954 and was involved in game affairs with that club from 1955-1957. From 1960-1965, he was teh Secretary of the then baseball-department of famous Amsterdam soccerclub Ajax, where wellknown soccerplayer Johan Cruijff played baseball as a kid.
The two sons of Henk Ronnenbergh, Martin and Erik, also were active in baseball. Manny Olivera signs pro-contract
Nederlands
HOUSTON (USA) - Manny Olivera, last season the pitching ace of Hypotheekzeker.nl-Tornado's, has signed a professional contract with the Florida Marlins-organisation.
The 27-year old lefthander finished the season with a 9-8 record, but led the league in Innings Pitched (136), StrikeOuts (142), Complete Games (12) and lowest ERA (1.52), making him a strong contender for the Best Pitcher Award for last year, which will be announced later this week.
In the last weeks, Olivera was working at the baseball school of Bo Porter in Houston (Texas), when a scout of the Florida Marlins was in the area for business. He 'discovered' Olivera and signed him to a contract. That states that he has to report for Spring Training on March 1. In the weeks thereafter, Olivera will be assigned to a team for the upcoming season.
Olivera, who holds a Spanish passport, has played professionally in the States before. Recently, he played for the semi-pro team Reno Astros, where he played together with both Jeffery Calderone and Mike Gillies, who last season also played for Tornado's. Last year, Reno participated in the Haarlem Baseball Week. In the past, he played for the Alexandria Aces and Amarillo Dillas, who play in Independent Leagues.
While Olivera will not return to the Dutch league this year, he remains a member of Tornado's, making him eligible to play for the team from The Hague in the future. But with the loss of Olivera, Tornado's now has to search for a replacement. Head Coach Jimmy Summers currently is in the States and looks around.

Two additional teams for World Cup 2005
Nederlands
LAUSANNE (Switzerland) - During its meeting of the Executive Committee this weekend, the International BAseball Federation (IBAF) decided that the field of participants for this years World Cup will be expanded with two teams. Instead of 16 countries, 18 will participate in the 35th World Championships, which will be held September 3-17 in the Dutch cities of Rotterdam, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Almere and Eindhoven.
The two additional teams will come from a qualification tournament, which is set to take place somewhere this Spring, but has to be completed by the end of March.
In November last year, the Pan-American qualification tournament took place in Cartagena (Colombia), with the six best teams qualifying for the World Cup. However, the teams from USA and Canada withdrew for that competition because of security concerns, leaving only seven teams to participate. The six best teams claimed their World Cup-spot, meaning an extra qualification tournament will be held to give the USA and Canada an opportunity also to qualify.
It is not yet known where the event will take place and what other countries will participate. The USA and Canada are being mentioned to host the tournament. Besides the USA and Canada, other countries who might participate are Italy, Czech Republic (representing Europe), Nigeria (Africa) and Guam (Oceania). Italy missed qualification by finishing in fifth place during the 2003 European Championships.
The set-up of the World Cup remains the same with two pools, now existing of nine instead of eight teams. With the expansion, it might be possible the event will start a day earlier.
