NEW YORK (USA) - The Minnesota Twins shutout the New York Yankees, 2-0, on Tuesday-evening in their opening game of the American League Division Series.
The Yankees outhit the Twins 9-7 and had more scoring opportunities, but the Twins turned a record five double plays and had some great defensive plays.
In the first inning, the Yankees got runners on first and second with one out, when Twin-starter Johan Santana struckout Bernie Williams, before Alex Rodriguez was thrown out trying to steal third base.
In the second, Jorge Posada and Hideki Matsui led off with singles, but then Twin-leftfielder Shannon Stewart made a great catch in front of the wall on a hit Ruben Sierra. Posada was able to advance to third base, but next hitter John Olerud flied out to centerfielder Torii Hunter, who then threw out Posada at the plate, as he tried to score.
After the Twins turned a double play in the fourth, Hideki Matsui doubled to deep rightfield, but a grounder ended the inning.
In the seventh inning, Ruben Sierra drove the ball to leftfield where it appeared it cleared the leftfield foul pole. Left Field Umpire Jerry Crawford signaled a homerun, but after a discussion with his colleagues, the veteran umpire, who is the crew chief in this Series, had to reverse his decision into a foul ball.
In the eighth, Bernie Williams grounded into a double play, followed by a fly to centerfielder by Alex Rodriguez, where Torii Hunter made an outstanding catch against the wall.

NEW YORK (USA) - In an exciting game, the New York Yankees came from behind to win Game Two of the ALDS vs. the Minnesota Twins, 7-6, in 12 innings to tie the Series, 1-1.
The Twins had re-taken the lead in the 12th on a homerun, but the Yanks scored twice in the home 12th to win the game. The Series now shift to Minneapolis for Game Three on Friday.
In the second inning, the Twins went back on top by scoring two runs. Corey Koskie was walked by Yankee-starter Jon Lieber, who next gave up a one-out single to Cristian Guzman. Michael Cuddyer followed with an RBI-single to give the Twins a renewed lead. A sac-fly by Henry Blanco made it 3-1.
But the Yankees came back right away and tied the score in the home third by scoring twice. With one out, Alex Rodriguez singled, followed by a 2-run homerun from Gary Sheffield.
In the fifth inning, the Yankees took the lead for the first time when Alex Rodriguez hit a one-out homerun. New York added a run in the seventh when Miguel Cairo walked and scored on an one-out single by Alex Rodriguez, making it 5-3.
But the score was tied again in the eighth inning. With one out Jacque Jones struckout, but reached first base on a wild pitch. After Torii Hunter singled, Mariano Rivera was brought in to relief Tom Gordon. However, the experienced closer was unable to save the game and was credited with a 'Blown Save', as the Twins tied the score. Rivera gave up an RBI-single to Justin Morneau, who was replaced by pinch-runner Luis Rivas. The score was tied when Corey Koskie followed with a ground-rule double, before the inning ended with a strikeout and flyout.
In the next innings, both teams didn't get much chances from the pitchers, but the Twins finally scored again in the 12th inning. In that at bat, Torii Hunter homered with two outs to give the Twins a 6-5 lead.
The Yankees came back immediately with a fantastic rally. With one out, Miguel Cairo and Derek Jeter walked, followed by a ground-rule double from Alex Rodriguez, who went 4-for-6.
