| How to connect your Psion with Mocha to the Internet? |
|---|
The Psion EPOC machines have a lot of possibilities to connect to the Internet. They have e-mail and web as standard programmes, but I have on my machine Telnet, Ping, Finger, FTP, Atomic clock, WAP and a messenger programme as well. I have two subscriptions to a mobile telecomprovider, but that is still not enough.
Before you start up Mocha, terminate all software which uses your serial port. That includes the PsiWin server. There should be no 'wiggly thing' in your system tray, not even the straight line. The PsiWin server should be stopped.
You will see a screen with setup information. Choose the correct serial port. Select the Win CE machine, preferably at a speed of 115200.
If Mocha can use your serial port freely, it will not give any error messages, but it will wait for a connection to your 'Palm', which is in this case a Psion.
You should define a new modem and a new Internet Service Provider on your Psion. I have a Dutch 5mx, so I cannot provide you with the right screen shots, but both settings are in your Control panel, under 'Modems' and 'Internet settings'. Users of the 5 classic should have Message Suite installed.
Modems
Go to the configuration screen, tap on the modems and select the option 'New'. Settings are as follows:
Modem
Name: Mocha connection
Options
Since Mocha does not use a loudspeaker, you can leave these settings as they are.
Initialisation
All strings should be empty
Advanced
Flow control: none
Modem Type: fixed line (this option does not exist on a 5 classic)
Internet
Save your modem settings, go to the Internet settings and choose 'New'.
Settings are:
Service
Name: Mocha PPP

Adresses

Press 'Done' once. You are now back in the Internet service settings screen.

If the Psion decides to disconnect itself, it thinks, it has been disconnected from the internet, but it has itself merely disconnected from your computer. If it wants to reconnect to the internet, it will get Mocha into trouble. To prevent this, the Psion should not disconnect when it is idle. That is why you should set these settings at a fairly large time.
It is advisable, that you already have an internet connection from your computer. This can be a dialup connection, but I use a LAN for example. It does not matter. If your Windows webbrowser and e-mailreader can make a connection, Mocha can usually do this also.
Connect your Psion with the PsiWin cable to the computer. You can use your cradle for your Revo (Plus)/Mako.
Whenever your Psion wants to make an internet connection, a pop-up screen will appear. Choose the Mocha PPP internet service and the Mocha connection modem and press OK. Your Psion will try to connect to your computer. As this occurs, you will see on the Mocha window, that it has established a connection and that bytes are flowing to and from your 'Palm'. You will now have an internet connection available for all of your Psion programmes.
Ofcourse, you use this programme on your own risk. It works splendidly with my machines, but I cannot guarantee it works for you. In fact, the makers of Mocha (Mochasoft) do not give official support to Psion users, because they do not know the specific 'ins and outs' of the Psion machine. You are free to contact me in case of troubles, but I am just another Psion fan and I am in no way connected to the Mochasoft company.
I hope you find this programme as much fun as I do. It is a cheap and very fast way to experiment with the Psion internet facilities.
I have tried to find cheaper ways to connect my Psion to the Internet and I have found a way to connect the Psion to my Win95 laptop, which is connected to the Internet. The laptop patches the TCP/IP connection through and I can use the speed and the low cost of the laptop's cable modem internet connection. It is a very good way to try new internet programmes. The programme on my laptop, which makes the connection is called Mocha W32 PPP and it has been made, ironically enough, for the Palm. But it can be used for your Psion, if you follow these instructions.Installation of Mocha
The programme Mocha W32 PPP can be found at www.mochasoft.dk . It comes as a .ZIP or a self-extracting .exe file. In this file you will find the setup programme and some manuals. Mocha is shareware and it costs USD9.95 for a single user licence. The trial version is fully working, but it has very annoying nag screens. You can install the setup and choose the directory where it should be installed. The setup offers you to install an icon in your Start menu. I suggest you do this.

This is very cool: you don't have to install any software on your Psion. Everything is already included with your standard Message Suite (ER3) or in your ROM (ER5).
