Nikolai Kapustin CDs
The popularity of the works of Nikolai Kapustin is increasing.
In 2003 he composed some new works. Please check his updated opus list.
His compositional style is a blend of West European classical and post
classical art music with the modern idioms of jazz and rock.
CDs with performances of his pianoworks by Boheme International and Hyperion show Kapustin's composing capabilities.
An example is Motive Force for piano. Check it yourself with the score of Motive Force.
And if you want to hear an example of his composing capabilities, then listen to his Toccatina.
The Japanese Company Nippon Acoustic Records Inc. issued two quite interesting CDs with piano works of Nikolai Kapustin,
performed by Masahiro Kawakami.
On the first CD 'Kapusin Piano Works 1' (NARD 5002) Kawakami plays brilliant pieces:
- Day Break opus 26
- Suite in Old Style opus 28
- Toccatina opus 36
- Variations opus 41
- Motive Force opus 45
- Big Band Sounds opus 46
- Contemplation opus 47
- Andante opus 58
- Paraphrase on a Theme by P. Dvoyrin opus 108
The second CD 'Kapusin Piano Works 2' (NARD 5003) Kawakami performs:
- Ten Bagatelles opus 59
- Berceuse opus 65
- Humoresque opus 75
- Sonatina opus 100
- Paraphrase on "Aquarela do Brasil" by Ary Barroso opus 118
Many visitors of this website have asked me for scores of the works of Nikolai Kapustin.
Fortunately MusT has started to issue his scores.
At the moment several scores are in print: Suite in the Old Style,
Toccatina, Eight Concert Etudes, Variations for piano, Ten Bagatelles, Five Études in Different Intervals,
24 Preludes opus 53 (piano solo), 24 Preludes & Fugues opus 82 (piano solo),
Piano Sonatina and his Piano Sonatas Nos. 1, 2, 6 and 8, Elegy opus 96 for cello & piano,
Burlesque opus 97 for cello & piano and Nearly Waltz op 98 for cello & piano.
A-Ram issued another quite interesting CD:
his Piano Sonatas Nos. 8, 10, 11 and 12, performed by Carlo Levi Minzi.
This recording was made in 2003 in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.
A new great CD, issued by Hyperion (CDA 67433), includes Hamelin's performances of Kapustin's Variations opus 41, Eight Concert Etudes opus 40,
Bagatelle opus 59, Suite in the Old Style opus 28, Piano Sonata No. 6 opus 62, Sonatina opus 100 and Five Etudes in Different Intervals opus 68.
Kapustin's piano writing is borne out of his considerable virtuoso capabilities, and bristles with the kind of tactile immediacy one associates with improvisational inspiration.
