Determinism is the principal effect of Spinozist causality. Devine and natural law universally produce the same effects. Every thing is depending on this causality and is unable to deviate from what has been foreseen by devine providence.
Related concepts: eindig; onvolmaakt, noodzaak.
'Bepalen' is used as a technical term for causal determination: what determines cannot be determined (onbepaald; cf.023sqq, 143sqq.). In 'voorbepalen' (096sqq.) this Spinozist doctrine is used to interpret the Calvinist doctrine of the will. In non technical sense 'bepaald' is used for specific (109sqq.) and definition (172). As translations of (in)finit* (on)bepaald and (on)eindig occur in the same syntagmas.
Related concepts: voortbrengen, scheppen, bepalen, macht.
'Afhangen' is used for hierarchical dependency (cf.069). Causality is a specific form of dependency. The Christian term creation (scheppen) is not a technical term. It is used to cover this Spinozistic content (134). Power (macht) is the ability to execute any dependency in this sense (200, 294).
Related concepts: rede.
The two clusters in the KV where wet* occurs, each have their own specific Spinozistic use of the term wet as 'rule' (logical use KV119-129) and as 'precept' (philosophical use KV301-367).
Related concepts: moeten.
'Behoren aan, toebehoren' (belong) -relatively frequent in notes and appendix- are used for the expression of -intuited (005, 150)- essential properties (002). Properties belonging to something's essence are necessary (028).
Liberty (vrijheid) and causality are one and the same: free is what is not determined by some external cause (098, 398). The concept of free cause (200, 091) is defined as a form of causality without external determination. In 'vrijmaker' (260, 347) the Christian term redemptor gets an adequate Spinozistic content: in Cats the term is used to refer to Christ: "Mensliever, Sondaers troost ..., Vry-maker ..., ô Heere Jesu koomt". The litteral juridical signification is to be found in Koerbagh: "Manumissor, vry-maaker, ontslaager; die iemand van de slavernye en diensten vry maakt en ontslaat".
Related concepts: bepalen.
Noodzakelijk: necessary in causal and logical sense. I.e. what with causal necessity analytically follows from any concept (044; cf.TIE062). In epistemology the subject of love mysticism is the all determining factor of cognition (194, 202sqq.). 'Noodschikken' (181) is used by Coornhert synonymously with predestination. The antonym 'gebeurlijk' -the usual translation of 'contingens' (Meyer, Woordenschat)- does not occur in the notes and is restricted to the fragment 109-111 (cf.1,33s).
Related concepts: poging, noodzaak.
'Voorzien, voorzorgen and onderhouden' here are used to provide a traditional theological terminology with a deterministic Spinozist content.
Related concepts: ontstaan, afhangen, verwekken, scheppen.
In strict sense '(voort)brengen' and its passive form '(voort)komen' are used for the concept of causal production. Often the distinction between loose and technical sense is hard to be made. Specific cases of causal production are creation (scheppen) and coming into being (ontstaan).
Related concepts: voortbrengen, voortkomen.
'Ontstaan' is used for coming into being without a specific cause; often in the context of the passions and in the appendix and the notes.
Related concepts: oorzaak, lijden, voortbrengen.
The effect of causality is the 'werking'. For the causal production of this effect ('voortbrengen'), the term 'uitwerken' is used and the products of this process are called 'gevrochten'. Because Spinoza does not use the concept final cause the 'werkende oorzaak' is by far the most important and most frequent cause (091, 093). Motion and thinking are are distinguished as the effects of causality in the atttributes (134-5, 309sqq.). The term werkmeester, used in this context, is from Aristotelian provenance (d?µ???????). All what exists can be analysed in things (zaken, dingen) and causes (werkingen) (140, 118). What cannot be analysed this way, is not real, but 'ens rationis'. Epistemologically speaking, the quality or perfection of the object is determining the kind of knowledge and this kind of knowledge on its term, is determining its emotional effects (157, 186sqq. 268, 353sqq.). *werk* is remarkebly infrequent in the appendix.
Related concepts: lijden.
'Doen' (do, make) + derivations predominantly occur in non-technical sense, not contrary to scripture. In technical use God is the active principle (035, 393) or effective cause (091) and action and passion are complementary (053).
Related concepts: beroven.
The destruction of the proportion of motion and rest of which particular things consist annihilates these things. The terms 'vernieten' and 'vernietigen' are used for this particular kind of change (425)whereas 'verzwakking' and 'verwoesting', have a biblical connotation (214).
