Standard terms are passion (passie) and desire (begeerte); the term 'passion' is in the margin two times as frequent as 'desire'. 'Lust' and 'tocht' are standard Dutch synonymes of passion and 'aandoening' can be considered a puristic translation of 'affectio'. 'Lijding' generally is used in the context of its antonym action (doening) which means that it signifies passion as opposed to action. Most of the specific passions can be found in the 'affectuum definitiones' in part three of the Ethics and show resemblance with the definitions in Descartes' Passions de l'âme.
