For the third person zelf-phrases with zich (sig, sig, zich) are yet more frequent than phrases with haar, hun, sijns, hem. In 75% of all instances zich is followed by zelf. This might be due to the recent introduction of zich into 17th century Dutch, which would necessitate the author of the text to make explicit the syntactic relation to its referent by using zelf.
